'Harry Potter' spin-off nabs Oscar winner in lead role

The Harry Potter universe is heading back to the big screen, sans Potter himself

When a film series grosses nearly $8 billion worldwide, then there's every reason why a studio would want to mine that just a little bit more. And that's exactly what Warner Brothers is doing with the 'Harry Potter' spin-off film series 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' which goes into production shortly. Today, the studio have announced the casting of the lead role - and he's quite the catch indeed.




According to the studio's official announcement, Eddie Redmayne has been cast in the role of Newt Scamander in the trilogy feature film adaptation of author J.K. Rowling's 2001 novel which is set approximately 70 years before the events of the 'Harry Potter' series. Helming the first film at least is David Yates, who directed four of the eight 'Potter' films, including the final two parts 'The Deathly Hallows'.



The studio are targeting a November 18 2016 launch for the first film.
